Use the above search box to search for various names for herbs and trees. Many cultures use different names for the same herb. Some of these names are easy to mistake for the wrong thing as many inquisitors and witch-hunters have failed to discover throughout history. For example, a spell that calls for "Bat Wings", "Horse's Tongue" and an "Old Woman" refers not to the grisly literal translation but to the herbs we know as "Holly", "Buttonhole", and "Sea Wormwood".

You can use this search engine to locate the other folk names suppliers may be using instead of the name you might be looking under. Our Herb Search results also include their Latin Names so that you can be sure you are getting the herb you want when buying or ordering supplies. The most common error that occurs when buying herbs is with the fabled Mandrake. There are at least four different kinds of Mandrake including: European, American, British and Womandrake.

The Latin names of these plants are respectively: Atropa Mandragora (also known as Mandragora officianalis and Mandragora officinarum by trained botanists though the Latin name was recently changed due to the discovery of certain characteristics in which European Mandrake shares with Belladonna, or Atropa belladonna), Podophyllum peltatum, Bryonia dioica and Mandragore Autumnale.
